On Tuesday, Nemzeti Sport stated Newcastle United are ‘keenly interested’ in signing RB Leipzig star Dominik Szoboszlai in the summer.
This was mentioned before Sky Deutschland journalist Philipp Hinze stated the Magpies have held talks with the 22-year-old’s agent over a summer deal. He also reported the player’s €70m release clause and salary won’t be a problem for Eddie Howe’s side.
Bild state Newcastle have been interested in the winger ‘for weeks’. He wasn’t happy at the Bundesliga side under Domenico Tedesco but his situation improved after Marco Rose replaced Tedesco last September.
This was revealed by the Hungary international himself during an interview with Index. There was no specific mention of reports linking him to Newcastle, but he hasn’t closed the door on joining the Tyneside club, if they make an approach for him in the summer.
“All options must be considered. I dreamed of a club for myself at the age of five, another as a teenager, seeing that it is not necessarily impossible to achieve these dreams.”
“If there is interest, I’ll consider it, not because I don’t have a good time at Leipzig, but because I’ve always been interested in challenges.”
“On one side of the scale is a good Leipzig, with a manager who trusts me and teammates who accept me and also believe in me. No footballer can wish for more than that. This is quite an extra situation.”
“At the same time, on the other side, there is the question, if I can now take a step towards Europe’s top five or six clubs, should I say no to the challenge? I’ve never been that type! I am in a very good position, as I can play in a fantastic club.”
“However, I don’t want 15 years from now to look back on my career as if I didn’t get the most out of it.”
Newcastle have already made contact with the player’s entourage and it’s now down to them to take further steps, if they wish to secure his services in the summer. Szoboszlai finished the 2022/23 season with nine goals and 13 assists from 45 games.
