Club legends, and even those quite far away from that status, are often asked their opinion relating to what’s going on at their former side.
These days they’re often paid to enhance those thoughts into controversy, with the quotes then sent out across news organisations with a request for a betting company to be mentioned as the source.
Aston Villa has a few, but for authentic, no-need-to-pay legends giving options it’s hard to compete with Bayern Munich. Near enough every big name who has appeared for the Bavarian giants has something to say about the club’s decisions, and perhaps none more so than Lothar Matthäus.
The most capped Germany player, with 150 of the things and a sackful of trophies, believes Bayern Munich should appoint Aston Villa’s Unai Emery as manager, and forget about their policy of having to hire a German speaker.
Bild am Sonntag quote him as saying: “I would get Unai Emery from Aston Villa now if it didn’t have to be a German-speaking coach. He has a lot of experience and also has international titles. Emery speaks perfect English, would bring a breath of fresh air and would be a new face for the Bundesliga. I think that would be good for Bayern.”
Frustrated by that plan to only appoint a German speaking manager, and with Bayern having a distinct lack of options in that regard, Matthäus added: “Roger Schmidt (currently at Benfica Lisbon, and not doing great) still has two years left on his contract, so he would cost a transfer fee. I don’t think Bayern would do that. That’s why Ralf Rangnick is currently my favourite if it has to be a German-speaking.”
Thankfully for Aston Villa, Unai Emery can’t learn German overnight, but it’s worth checking his phone for Duolingo.
