Valencia manager Pako Ayestaran is having a nightmare summer. When he took over at the club he knew sales would be on the way, but will have hoped those sales would mainly be players he didn’t much rely on.

The Spanish club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League meant they needed to sell in order to fit with FFP rules in the country. Peter Lim’s takeover of the club had promised so much but the club have gone backwards rather than forwards, in results terms at least.

Valencia wanted to sell Aymen Abdennour and there was much excitement when it was reported Everton were interested. The sale would have allowed Valencia to protect themselves against other exits.

However, Everton had second thoughts, or came to their senses, and Abdennour remains at Valencia, a club he knows have wanted to sell him.

Andre Gomes went to Barcelona to bring a big chunk of money in, and Paco Alcácer looks set to join him. Also on the way out is Shkodran Mustafi, to Arsenal, and Pako has been speaking about the transfers.

Surprisingly he’s remaining positive and said: “I think we have a good replacement,” for Mustafi. A fan poll on Super Deporte shows that Valencia fans overwhelmingly want that replacement to be Zenit’s Ezequiel Garay.

That would be as well as a move for Deportivo La Coruna’s Sidnei.
