Ajax should sell defender Calvin Bassey to Fulham this summer, and Rafael Van der Vaart will drive him to Craven Cottage if they want him to.
That’s what the former footballer turned pundit has stated today, insisting that he’d be happy to get rid of the player for Ajax if they need him to.
Bassey joined the Dutch giants in a move from Rangers last summer but endured a difficult first campaign at the club where he struggled to prove his worth and committed numerous high-profile errors.
He’s subsequently been linked with a move away this summer, with Brighton first credited with an interest and then Fulham.
It is now very much Marco Silva’s side pushing for a deal to happen, despite claims that Bassey isn’t interested in the move and wants to stay and prove himself with Ajax this season.
That’s very much a decision which could be taken out of his hands if Ajax decide to sell and give up on the player after a year of struggle.
Van der Vaart would certainly take up that option, a point he made more than clear when asked about the potential transfer.
“I just drove up here in the golf cart. I would take him away myself with that tonight,” MSN report him saying on the SBS6 program De Oranjezomer.
Whether he gets the opportunity remains to be seen, but his comments are an example of how the defender is viewed in the Netherlands at this moment in time.
Another high-profile mistake in the recent friendly with Shakhtar Donetsk won’t have helped that and perhaps Bassey would be best served getting out to Fulham while he can and taking up that offer of a lift from Van der Vaart to do it.
