The past few weeks have been a nightmare to write about when it comes to Idrissa Gueye and Paris Saint-Germain’s interest, as no one really knows how much Everton want for their player, while certain members of the French media seem offended they aren’t selling him for peanuts to the Ligue 1 champions.
The latest fee talked about was around €40m, which the Parisians can’t afford, but the fact he isn’t in France yet didn’t stop Thiago Silva, the capital club’s captain, from commenting on the Senegal international’s potential arrival over the weekend.
In an interview with Téléfoot, the Brazilian talked about a variety of topics, ranging from Neymar’s impact to the upcoming Champions League clash against Manchester United, before being asked what he thought of the Everton defensive midfielder, and if he would be a good buy.
He said: “To say I know a lot about him wouldn’t be true, but I know he’s a high-level player because Paris Saint-Germain don’t go after players who don’t fit the level of the team.
“If he comes, we’ll try and help him settle as quickly as possible. Of course, all players playing at a very, very high level are welcome in Paris.”
Everton’s reluctance to let Gueye go shows how important the defensive midfielder is to their and Marco Silva’s plans for the second half of the campaign, and only an offer beyond their expectations should make them change their mind.
We’re not quite there yet.
