Borussia Dortmund were keen to sign Edson Álvarez before he completed his move to West Ham United from Ajax in the last window.
Last month, the 26-year-old insisted he’s delighted to have joined the Hammers after his move to BVB didn’t take shape.
Speaking to Sky Deutschland journalist Florian Plettenberg, the midfielder has reiterated that he’s pleased to be at West Ham after he came “so close” to joining the German club.
West Ham appointed Tim Steidten as their new technical director in the summer and he had a key role in convincing the player to join David Moyes’ side.
When asked about Steidten, he said: “It was funny because he called me and said, ‘listen, I want you for my new project. You’re my first player. I know what you can give us’. He gave me confidence and the opportunity. Then I told him, ‘Tim, if you really want me, I am with you. I want to play for West Ham in the Premier League’.”
The Mexico international has also said Bayern Munich showed interest towards the end of the last window.
“It was a very busy summer. In the last weeks (of the transfer window), I knew about the interest from FC Bayern,” Álvarez explained.
The former Ajax man’s deal lasts until 2028 and this gives David Moyes’ side some power over his future.
Álvarez has made 10 appearances for West Ham, and insisted that he’s “very happy” with his transfer and the start to his life at the London club.
