Philippe Sandler has insisted it was bad luck that brought his Manchester City career to a disappointing and premature end.

Sandler completed a return to the Netherlands with Feyenoord on deadline day of the January transfer window, bringing an end to a three-year stay at the Etihad.

He had been highly rated when he arrived at the club from PEC Zwolle in July 2018 but would go on to make just two senior appearances for Manchester City in the following years.

Loan spells at Anderlecht and Troyes also proved to be unsuccessful, with injuries limiting him to just a handful of appearances for both clubs.

It is because of that why Manchester City have allowed him to return to the Netherlands on a free transfer, although Feyenoord chief Frank Arnesen revealed this week that they still have an option to sign the defender in future.

That’s dependent on him doing well at his new club, which will require far better luck than he’s had so far.

Things didn’t go well at the Etihad, to say the least, and Sandler believes it was pure bad luck that stopped things from being different.

“I just had bad luck,” he told NOS.

“With hindsight, you can say that it was not the right choice, but it could just as well have been very different.

“I’m at Feyenoord now, one of the biggest clubs in the Netherlands. I’m not that bad off.

“For me, it feels like coming home. You’re close to your family again, which is something I miss abroad.”
