On Sunday, Robin Olsen came off the bench in Aston Villa’s defeat to Manchester United following Emiliano Martínez’s red card.
The clash at Old Trafford was Olsen’s last match for Aston Villa as they have confirmed he will leave the club as a free agent. Earlier claims from Sweden had stated the 35-year-old is set to return to Malmö FF.
Malmö have announced the goalkeeper will return to the club once his contract at Aston Villa expires on June 30th.
Tuesday’s edition of Göteborgs-Posten covers this news and relays comments made by the Sweden international.
Olsen had two spells with the Swedish club in the past, including three years with their academy. He will start his third spell with them from July 1st and signed a contract until 2029.
The former Everton man insists his decision to leave the Premier League club for Malmö is the right one.
“I’m coming home with a positive feeling in my body, and it feels absolutely right to move back to Malmö,” he said.
“An incredible amount has happened in the club since I left 10 years ago. I’ve seen the development from a distance, but of course I’m looking forward to coming home and being part of this journey.
“I get shivers already when I think about going out to the stadium again. It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced it, but the times I’ve been here the setting has been fantastic. I’ve shown clips to teammates in England, and they’re always impressed. It’ll be fun to experience it again as a player and fight for the club.”
Malmö sporting director Daniel Andersson has expressed his delight over securing an agreement with Olsen.
“We are very happy to bring home Robin, who has maintained a high international class for a very long time,” Andersson explained.
“He’s a stable goalkeeper who has experience from playing at the highest level and the fact that he also comes from the club originally makes this feel great in every way.”
Olsen returned to England when Aston Villa signed him from AS Roma in 2022. He made 22 appearances for the Villans in three seasons.
