Newcastle United’s Jamal Lewis is set to complete a surprise move to São Paulo.
The Magpies allowed the defender to spend last season on loan at Watford. Eddie Howe has left him out of his plans this season and the 26-year-old could leave Newcastle.
The latest claims in the English press have stated that the left-back has arrived in Brazil to carry out the transfer formalities. This is now backed up ESPN in Brazil, who state the Newcastle player’s transfer to São Paulo is ‘practically closed’.
It’s claimed the Northern Ireland international arrived at the Guarulhos International Airport on Sunday. He will undergo medical tests and sign the contract with his new club, before returning to the national team camp for this month’s international break.
Arquibancada Tricolor had a chat with the Newcastle man, upon his arrival in Brazil, and his comments are relayed by ESPN.
Lewis admitted he couldn’t turn down an opportunity to join the South American club. The defender has also explained what he can bring to São Paulo
“I chose São Paulo because when the opportunity came to me, I felt like I couldn’t let it go. I’m very happy to wear the shirt of a three-time world champion club,” he said.
“I’m excited about the contact with the fans, I saw some games. Helping in defence, in attack, in scoring goals. I hope to help São Paulo a lot with my contribution.”
Lewis joined the Tyneside club from Norwich City in 2020 and has played 36 games for them since then.
