While the transfer has not been made official by either club, it’s a well-known secret that Christopher Nkunku will join Chelsea in the summer, and some don’t think he made the right choice.
The Frenchman agreed a deal with the Blues a while back, but decided to finish the season in Germany with RB Leipzig.
Since then, Chelsea have ended up in all kinds of messes, sacking Graham Potter and bringing in Frank Lampard to see off the campaign while they look for a long-term replacement.
That’s why there’s a lot of concern from one of his former mentors in Germany, with that being Ralf Rangnick, who was interim manager at Manchester United last season and currently manages the Austria national team.
Speaking to ZDF about the Leipzig player, the 64-year-old was very candid when asked about Nkunku’s move to Chelsea.
Relayed by Bild, he said: “I’m also thinking of a player whose commitment to RB Leipzig I was at least a little involved in – Christopher Nkunku. For me, one of the best attacking midfielders currently available and who, in my opinion, decided to move to Chelsea far too early.
“Imagine he comes to a club that is in the state it is at the moment. Such an outstanding player. This hurts my heart personally. If I were his advisor or his father, I would be very worried right now.”
Injured for a good chunk of the current campaign, Nkunku has still managed to impress when called upon, scoring 17 goals and assisting another five in 28 appearances in all competitions.
