While everyone else appears to be happy at Wout Weghorst’s arrival at Ajax from Burnley this summer, we knew at some point there would be some dissenters.
Step forward Johan Derksen, via Voetbal Primeur, who has been criticising the transfer today, believing the arrival of the Burnley man is an indicator of Ajax’s fall from grace.
Weghorst completed a move from Burnley earlier this week, returning to the Netherlands in a €2.38m deal after a busy few years.
He joined Burnley in January 2022 but only managed two goals and 22 appearances in total for them after they were relegated later that season.
He’s since spent loan spells at Besiktas, Manchester United and then TSG Hoffenheim, with Burnley and the player both unkeen on the idea of working together in future.
They’ve both gotten their wish this summer, with Ajax bringing him back to the Eredivisie to bolster their forward ranks as part of their rebuild.
On paper the transfer is a debatable one given the Dutch side already have Brian Brobbey, Chuba Akpom and Julian Rijkhoff on their books. Derksen, though, believes there is a bigger issue to the new arrival.
“Ajax, with that famous youth academy. It is swearing at the academy that you idealize this man,” he said.
“If I were now in charge of Ajax’s youth academy, I would feel terribly cheated that you brought in a flawed veteran. How low can you sink as Ajax, that you are happy with Wout Weghorst?”
