PSV Eindhoven’s Cody Gakpo has opened the door to joining Manchester United after failing to get himself a move to Old Trafford in the last transfer window.
The forward held talks with the Red Devils in the summer and this was confirmed by the Eredivisie side’s chief, Marcel Brands. The latter had also stressed the interest shown by the English club disrupted the 23-year-old’s preparations for this season.
Leeds United and Southampton also made firm efforts to take Gakpo away from the Dutch club towards the end of the window. His decision to not join either of these two clubs has seem him excel with PSV this season.
The Netherlands international has starred for Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side, managing 13 goals and 17 assists from 23 matches in all competitions.
“I think at the end of this season I will be ready to take that step. I feel like I was already that way at the beginning of this season, but after this season I’m even more ready to take the next,” Gakpo told NOS.
When asked about which top club he would prefer to join, the player explained: “PSV was always my dream club. I don’t really have one for the rest.
“Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool. It would be an honour to play there, but I also have to see what kind of team would suit me best.”
The Red Devils will need to invest on a new attacker since Cristiano Ronaldo’s deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of this season. This, coupled with Anthony Martial’s ongoing injuries could see Erik ten Hag’s side look for a new player next summer.
