With Alaves playing Athletic Club Bilbao tonight, and both clubs wanting Ibai Gomez to be playing for them from the January window onwards, the player is getting widespread coverage today in Spain.

Alaves want Gomez to sign a renewal, but the player has been holding off and that’s helped attract interest from Leeds United, Athletic and others.

AS’ Basque edition today looks at the reason Alaves will push for a January sale if they can’t get a renewal before then. It’s explained that Gomez will listen to what his current club have to offer, but it’s thought that’s only as a courtesy because they can’t compete with the financial opportunities elsewhere.

That’s when AS bring basketball into the equation. Yes, basketball.

Alaves’ owner Josean Querejeta is ‘not a football man’ and will look to get some money, with the €4m figure mentioned again, rather than risk losing the player for nothing. Querejeta is a former basketball professional himself, and currently helps run Saski Baskonia, which he’s said to be more interested in than Alaves.

So with the football club not having their owner’s heart, he’ll make a pragmatic decision, which would see an easier route for a January transfer. That’s good news for Leeds, Athletic and the other clubs interested in Gomez.
