Right-back Daniel Muñoz has re-established himself as a regular starter for Crystal Palace after returning from knee surgery that sidelined him between December and January.
In an exclusive interview with ESPN Colombia, the defender spoke openly about his recovery and admitted he is still working his way back to peak form ahead of the World Cup.
“I do not know if unfortunately or fortunately I had to go through surgery. It was something very minor, but it stopped me from playing many important matches in December and January that I personally did not want to miss,” he admitted.
“But health comes first. I am back, regaining that confidence. I have been feeling very good and I am not at the level I finished at, but I feel better,” he said.
Now back in the Crystal Palace XI
Daniel Muñoz returned to action a month ago and immediately regained his place in the starting XI in England. His comeback has coincided with a mixed run of results for Crystal Palace following a strong start to the Premier League campaign. In January he was linked with a possible exit, but timing ended up being an issue.
In Europe, he started the first leg of the Conference League play-offs against Zrinjski and delivered an improved defensive display. Notably, he cleared a ball off the line to get a precious away draw. Palace now need a win in London to progress to the round of 16.
Domestically, the Eagles have won two of their last five league matches and have created breathing space from the relegation zone. However, injuries to key players disrupted their earlier momentum.
“We suffered injuries to key players and that affected our ability to keep going the way we were. We have to keep working. I firmly believe that in the end, work always pays off,” the Antioquia-born defender added.
World Cup focus driving decision
With the World Cup just over 100 days away, Muñoz admitted his decision to undergo surgery was influenced by the need to be physically ready for Colombia.
“Health is always the priority. I did not want to miss any matches, but it was a decision I had to take. I had to be in optimal condition to compete in the rest of the season. That was the quickest path. My recovery was a success,” he explained.
Colombia face Croatia and France in upcoming friendlies in the United States during the next international break. For Muñoz, the message remains clear.
“We are very committed to the national team and to our country. It is a dream and we will always give our best. We are eager for the World Cup to arrive and to reach the highest level,” he concluded.
For Crystal Palace, a fully fit Muñoz offers both defensive solidity and attacking thrust down the right – qualities that will be crucial in the final stretch of the season.
