Tottenham Hotspur youngster Alejo Veliz has revealed how Cuti Romero once grabbed him and tried to shake sense into him during training.
The striker has been speaking to Ole about his time in Europe so far, which is yet to go how he or Tottenham would have envisioned.
The 21-year-old joined Tottenham in a €15m deal from Rosario Central in August 2023 but is yet to establish himself at the club.
He’s instead found himself out on loan since that point, first joining Sevilla in a disastrous loan deal in the second half of last season. He then joined Espanyol on loan in the summer, as it was again made clear that he was not a part of Tottenham’s immediate plans.
He has been a regular for the Spanish side this season with 22 appearances in the league to date but just one goal in those. He’s also only featured in 38% of the available minutes to date.
It’s been a frustrating period for him since moving to Europe, with him yet to enjoy the real step up that he was likely hoping for. He has plenty of time to do that, though, something it seems Tottenham’s Romero was keen to impress upon him.
“At Tottenham, I probably got angry when I didn’t get involved much, and one day Cuti grabbed me and said, “You’re at Tottenham, you’re 20. Enjoy this, it’s crazy, you’re at the top level,” he said.
“That’s when you realize the kind of person they are. Cuti went through a lot to become a world champion. Coco (Lamela) and Acuña also helped me. They support you so you can go into training with the best of your ability.”
