Nottingham Forest shouldn’t be too disappointed to have missed out on Feyenoord star Santiago Gimenez. That’s at least what former PSV Eindhoven and Sparta Rotterdam winger Rene van der Gijp claims.
Van der Gijp talks about Dutch football weekly on podcast Kieft Jansen Egmond Gijp. In the latest episode, Nottingham Forest’s failure to sign Gimenez was discussed, and his comments are relayed by Soccernews.nl.
Nottingham Forest made multiple offers to the Eredivisie side. Their last proposal was reportedly around €33m plus €2m bonuses.
Two days ago, claims from Mexican and the Dutch press insisted the striker has decided to snub Nottingham Forest. Therefore, Feyenoord have put an end to the negotiations with the Premier League side.
Despite starring for Feyenoord generally over that period, the Dutch pundit is of the belief the frontman isn’t good enough to play in the Premier League. He’s basing his argument on Gimenez’s recent performances and form over the past six months.
“If you see Gimenez playing for six months, the Premier League is the very last competition he should go to,” he said.
“Physically he can’t handle that at all. He’s no longer a shadow of the player he was during the first six months at Feyenoord.”
Nuno Espírito Santo’s side have now shifted their focus to Eintracht Frankfurt star Omar Marmoush to bolster their strike force.
There’s been lots of reports in the Dutch media, who can be very harsh, criticising Gimenez’s form in the second half of last season. He’s started this campaign with goals so will be hoping to make critics eat their words in the coming months.
