Manchester United’s Ander Herrera performed well for the club against stoke City at the weekend. The former Athletic Club Bilbao midfielder has always been full of enthusiasm and energy, but throughout his career there’s been a niggling doubt surrounding positional sense and discipline with it. Maybe it’s Marcelo Bielsa’s fault.
Jose Mourinho is perhaps the perfect manager to drum that into Herrera, and it may even already be working. Herrera’s good recent form has caught the attention of Spain manager Julen Lopetegui, and Herrera received a late call-up on Monday afternoon, explain Spanish newspaper Marca.
Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez is injured and there are doubts over his club teammate Thiago Alcantara. That’s led to Lopetegui first calling up Real Sociedad’s Inigio Martinez, and then Herrera as well, just to make sure he’s got cover.
Herrera’s club teammate Juan Mata may well be disappointed but he’ll surely be thrilled if Herrera ends up getting a chance in Spain’s senior team.
