When Sporting’s strong interest in signing Marcus Edwards from Vitória Guimarães started being reported by the Portuguese media this month, it had been said that the Lions would pay as much as €8m for the transfer.

Due to an agreement when the player left Tottenham Hotspur in 2019, the London side have the right of 50% of his move, so it always sounded like about €4m would be going to Spurs.

However, as newspaper Record today features another story on the winger, they now make things clearer by saying Edwards would actually cost double that.

It’s now explained that Vitória Guimarães demand €8m for only their share of the sale. That means the total operation would cost €16m, and therefore Tottenham would also make €8m.

Record says Sporting are indeed willing to pay as much as €7.5m for Vitória’s share, spending a total of €15m on the signing, and the clubs continue to negotiate.

That now brings a lot more sense to the story, as Marcus Edwards is valued by Transfermarkt at 13m and seemed to be moving for too little. Since joining the Portuguese club in 2019, he has 20 goals and 15 assists in 94 appearances.
