Following Tottenham Hotspur’s defeat to Middlesbrough which knocked the London side out of the FA Cup this week, there was certainly a lot to criticise within Antonio Conte’s side.
It turns out one of the players blamed for the defeat was Emerson Royal, who was brought on in the second half and had a quite disappointing performance in his few minutes on the pitch.
The fullback got so many negative comments on social media that it even drew the attention from the Spanish press, who now writes about Barcelona’s decision to sell him to Tottenham last summer.
Outlet AS features on their homepage a headline which says Emerson’s transfer to Spurs was the ‘sale of the year’ for the Catalan side, who made €30m from the move.
Since Barcelona had just spent €14m to sign Emerson from Betis in the same summer, there had been many doubts at the club whether he should be sold, as the Camp Nou side had problems to fix in their right-back position.
However, AS points out that’s no longer a controversy. ‘The Blaugrana club made a golden deal by letting him go’, the outlet writes, claiming the Brazilian wouldn’t have been capable of being their solution.
