Manchester City striker Julian Alvarez has been proving he doesn’t need to be a centre-forward to help the team with goals, and that was the case with his brace against Red Star.
The Argentina international helped Pep Guardiola’s side with two goals in their 3-1 win, and there was a lot to talk about after the match.
TNT Sports journalist Fred Caldeira first managed to speak to Pep Guardiola about Manchester City’s performance, and had a question about Alvarez’s importance to the team.
The coach highlighted the youngster’s performance and claimed he was responsible for his side’s win in their Champions League debut this season.
“Yes, because he gives you everything. He scores goals, well, he always scored goals, assists, he does the job behind Erling very well. In the end, he won us another game,” Pep Guardiola told TNT Sports.
“Well, I always try to be available, to train 100% to be ready when the opportunity arrives. It’s always good to play, and when I’m on the field, I’ll be there to do my best for the team.”
Regarding his positioning playing behind Erling Haaland, the Argentine explained that role isn’t actually new for him.
“Yes, I played in that position several times at different stages of my career, at River Plate and for the Argentine national team. That’s a little deeper, it’s not a centre-forward, but I try to move around to find spaces to be another playing option and also attack.”
Alvarez has four goals and four assists in eight appearances for Manchester City this season, having started in all of their Premier League and Champions League games so far. Following the treble last season, it’s probably been an even better start in European football than he could have ever imagined.
