West Ham United could still make a move for former Liverpool defender Joel Matip, with ‘further negotiations pending’.

That’s according to Ruhr 24, who cover the player today and how West Ham remain in the picture for the defender.

The 33-year-old remains a free agent after leaving Liverpool in the summer, with the Reds electing to not renew his deal and bring his eight-year spell at the club to an end.

He’s been linked with various moves since, with former club Schalke having shown an interest and Bayer Leverkusen also holding talks but not progressing to anything concrete.

That’s because the defender’s last competitive appearance was around nine months ago after he suffered a torn cruciate ligament.

West Ham are the latest to have ‘sought his services’ according to Ruhr 24 and ‘further negotiations are still pending here’. In other words, the Hammers could still try to scoop up the free agent.

That would certainly be surprising given the money West Ham have spent on their centre-backs this summer, but Julen Lopetegui has four in his squad and perhaps he is eyeing a cheap, back up option.

Whether Matip would want the move to the London Stadium after his time at Liverpool remains to be seen, but it appears the option may be on the table.
