It was reported in Spain last month that during a meal ahead of their Champions League clash and a chat about the summer, Arsenal had informed Real Madrid that they’d pretty much sewn up an agreement to take Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad.
Then earlier this month, Real Sociedad published an interview with the midfielder which looked like the prelude to a goodbye from the Basque club, with him talking about his childhood and growing up with La Real, saying he couldn’t have asked for any more.
Despite all of that, there’ll still have been some nerves around Arsenal given what happened with Zubimendi and Liverpool last summer. The Reds thought they’d secured a deal with the midfielder, and were prepared to pay his release clause, only for him then to change his mind and decide to stay at Real Sociedad.
Spain’s Cope now report from their Basque section that Zubimendi hasn’t actually made his final decision.
Whilst it’s stated ‘everything points to the player heading to Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal’, it’s then said ‘everything could change with a call from Real Madrid’.
Xabi Alonso wants a couple of midfielders, especially with Luka Modric leaving, and Cope state: ‘If Real Madrid goes all out for him, the Spanish international will go to the Spanish capital, although everything points to London and Arsenal.’
