Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of Mathys Tel on loan from Bayern Munich on deadline day.
The striker initially refused to leave and was determined to fight for his place at Bayern. He then changed his stance and after deciding to leave, Spurs agreed a €60m deal with the Bundesliga giants.
Tel, however, rejected Tottenham and wasn’t able to secure a move to Manchester United and Arsenal. He then changed his mind and decided to join Ange Postecoglou’s side on loan.
Both clubs have announced Tottenham have an option to make his stay permanent at the end of this season. Sky Deutschland journalist Kerry Hau took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to provide more details on the conditions for Spurs to buy the 19-year-old.
The north London club have secured a purchase option of €60m [€55m + €5m bonuses] and this has also been reported in the UK.
Hau claims it’s a ‘pure purchase option’ and insists there are no conditions to convert it into a mandatory obligation. The journalist adds the France U21 international ‘must also agree’ for Tottenham to make his stay permanent in the summer.
In other words, Spurs can’t unliterally exercise the €60m purchase clause to retain Tel beyond this season. The frontman’s approval is needed for this.
