Sky Deutschland this week had a chance to have quite a long conversation with Liverpool defender Joel Matip.
The German outlet had been highlighting the good start to the season the Reds have had, despite the many changes in the summer window, and talked about the expectations around their debut in this edition of Europa League.
There were also some personal questions for Matip, and those were actually the most interesting pieces in the interview. One of those was if the defender will finish his career having only played for two clubs.
At the age of 32, he only has professional appearances for Schalke 04 and Liverpool.
“I’m at an age where I don’t worry so much about the future anymore,” Matip told Sky.
“I try to make the most of every day and don’t look too far ahead. If in the end it was just these two clubs, I would be perfectly happy. But in football you never know for sure.”
Matip also talked about how proud he is to have been a regular player at Liverpool for so many years now.
“At a club like Liverpool, competition is part of the game. Of course I’m happy that I managed to hold my own for such a long time. Of course, you have to show something every now and then – otherwise you won’t have the opportunity to stay that long. We have so much quality and so many games that you inevitably end up on the bench – that’s normal. And I’m also happy to have such good colleagues in central defence.”
Sky also wanted to know if the defender feels like a ‘real scouser’ these days, but he thinks there’s still a little left for that.
“I haven’t got used to the accent – you can still hear the good old German-English. But I understand people quite well now. And the mentality here is similar to that in the Ruhr area.”
Signed from Schalke in 2016 as a free agent, Matip already has 190 appearances for Liverpool, and has been a starter in Jürgen Klopp’s side recently.
