Even though Vasco da Gama youngster Andrey Santos seems to be on his way to Chelsea, it’s no secret Newcastle United had been in the race for his signing.
In the past few months, several reports from Brazil claimed the Magpies were interested in the 18-year-old, having even made contacts to bring him to St. James’ Park.
Once his move to the Blues was claimed on Wednesday, reports said Newcastle had indeed made an offer, but Andrey himself ended up choosing to go to the Stamford Bridge.
It turns out the Brazilian media continues to share more information on that race, and Atenção Vascaínos’ journalist Emerson Rocha now brings more interesting details on the Magpies’ pursuit.
He claims that among the English clubs who were interested in Andrey, ‘the first was Newcastle’.
It’s then said the Magpies even called Vasco legend Juninho Pernambucano to get more information on the youngster.
When this call happened isn’t made clear and it’s only claimed that Juninho then asked Andrey to stay ‘at least’ until their promotion to Serie A, which happened in early November.
Therefore, it sounds like that approach may have taken place in the summer, but it was all ultimately in vain for Newcastle, since it appears Chelsea have pipped them to it.
