Manchester United chiefs Richard Arnold and John Murtough have left Barcelona without an agreement from Frenkie de Jong to join them this summer.
The Red Devils, who have agreed a deal with the La Liga side, have given an ultimatum to the midfielder to make a decision this week.
De Jong hasn’t received a chunk of his deferred wages and he wants this sorted out before leaving the Camp Nou. This seems to be holding up his sale to Manchester United.
Mundo Deportivo state Barcelona will have problems if the 25-year-old is not sold. The Netherlands international’s exit will generate something the club urgently need; ‘wage fair play’.
Erik ten Hag’s side want to sign the former Ajax star at all costs and the latter’s departure will help Barca save €30-35m in wages. This is a must to register new players. Therefore, Xavi Hernández is not opposing his sale.
Over at Sport, they state it’s time to convince the Dutchman to leave, after Manchester United and Xavi’s side agreed a deal worth €85m.
It’s claimed De Jong is the only ‘expendable’ player at the Camp Nou and his sale is for economic reasons.
A ‘minor sacrifice for major business’, but De Jong does not want to leave the club.
Barca president Joan Laporta and sporting director, Mateu Alemany, will now focus on convincing him to agree to join United. Sport add that it may ‘even be necessary to give him a financial boost’ so that the Dutchman joins Ten Hag’s side.
This is ‘not very romantic’, but could be necessary so there is enough room in Barcelona’s wage bill, which is needed to register new signings.
