Former Juventus goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson has tipped Watford’s Pontus Dahlberg to be Sweden’s No.1 in the coming years.

Dahlberg joined Watford in the last window from IFK Goteborg, but was instantly loaned back to the Swedish club until the end of the season.

Speaking to Afonbladet, Isaksson was asked about Dahlberg’s ability and whether he could succeed in the Premier League. “He seems to be a winner and will certainly go a long way in his career. In a few years he will certainly be in the national team.

“It’s a bit easier in England with the language than in Italy, but it will be tough for him. But he seems to have the talent and the head.”

The 19 year old joined Watford in January for an undisclosed fee, but it’s been suggested it was around 35m Krona (about £3.1m), a record for a Swedish goalkeeper.

Isaksson had his own big move as a youngster, swapping Trelleborgs for Juventus, but it didn’t quite work out. Not to be deterred by that, the keeper went on to represent clubs including Manchester City, Rennes and PSV… and achieved 133 caps with Sweden.

Dahlberg’s performances this season earned him a call up to the national team and it’s expected in the Swedish press that he’ll be challenging for the Watford No.1 sport next season.

This summer’s World Cup has come a bit too soon in Dahlberg’s career but he’s likely to be involved in tournaments in the coming years.
