We all know Gonçalo Guedes’ move from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Benfica was a big thing in Portugal, as his return to the Eagles had huge coverage from the local media.
It turns out that with the attacker scoring a goal in his new debut for the club, that hype only got bigger, and the Lisbon press continues to speak of his comeback.
Radio Renascença had on Monday a chat with former Valencia manager Marcelino Toral, who used to be Guedes’ coach at the La Liga side. In the interview, he talked about what a great move Benfica made by signing him from Wolves.
“Gonçalo Guedes is a very good player. In addition, he can play in various positions in attack. For Benfica, he is an extraordinary reinforcement,” Toral told Radio Renascença (via O Jogo).
“It’s a club that he knows perfectly, it’s his land, he’ll be supported by his family and his friends, which is something that can help a lot, and I’m sure he’ll have a very good performance.”
“He can perform better playing at Benfica than at Wolverhampton, for example. It’s a team that is more suited to him, to his motivation, to his ambition, conditions that are necessary to give the maximum performance.
“I have great confidence in Gonçalo because he’s a good player, he seems to me to be a calm boy and a very good person, I wish him the best, and I really believe in his footballing qualities.”
Gonçalo Guedes joined Wolves on a €32.6m move from Valencia last summer. In his few months at the Molineux, he had two goals and one assist in 18 appearances for the club.
He’s now staying at Benfica until the end of the season, and it’s unclear what the Premier League side plan to do with him after that, as he signed a contract which is supposed to run until 2027.
