Barcelona looked at Liverpool star Georginio Wijnaldum to strengthen their squad in the last window.
The La Liga side appointed Ronald Koeman as their manager for this season and the former Everton manager had identified the 30-year-old as his main target for the midfield.
Barca, however, couldn’t complete a deal for the Netherlands international due to their ‘delicate financial condition’. This was already reported in the past and it’s mentioned again in today’s edition of Mundo Deportivo.
The former Newcastle United man’s current deal runs down at the end of this season. On Thursday, Jürgen Klopp admitted he has ‘nothing much to say’ about the Dutchman’s contract situation.
According to Mundo, ‘everything indicated’ the player was expected to sign a new contract with the Reds after the Catalan club failed to sign him last summer.
However, the latest information indicate he has ‘rejected’ the English champions’ first renewal offer.
It’s claimed Wijnaldum turned down Liverpool’s contract proposal because he ‘continues thinking about’ about Barcelona. He wants to arrive at the Camp Nou as a free agent after this campaign.
The contract situation has had no impact on Wijnaldum’s playing time as he has made 15 starts in the league for Liverpool this season.
