Everton manager Ronald Koeman believes Roberto Martinez is the right man for Belgium. Koeman replaced Martinez in the summer after the Spaniard was sacked by the Merseyside club at the end of last season.
In an interview with HLN, Koeman was asked about the surprise appointment of Martinez in the summer. The Dutchman said the former Everton manager has good experience at club level, and even though he’s new to the international scene his way of playing the game, combined with the players at his disposal, should be a benefit.
Koeman went on to say Martinez looks to be a good fit for Belgium, after the departure of Marc Wilmots.
“Yes, but you never know. Martinez has experience as a club coach, the national team is something else. With the type of players he has with Belgium, his experience as a trainer and the way his team is trying to play, this should be a good mix,” said Koeman on the former Everton boss.
In August, it was announced Martinez would become the next coach of Belgium after Wilmots stepped down from the role following their defeat to Wales at Euro 2016. Martinez was quick to bring in his own coaching staff by appointing Graeme Jones as No.2, and ex Arsenal star Thierry Henry as his second assistant coach.
