When Everton decided to spend £26m on Yannick Bolasie, no one could have predicted what was about to happen next.
The winger was enjoying a great spell in his career when he moved to Goodison Park, but the cruciate ligament injury he suffered in December 2016 stopped him in his tracks, and he’s never managed to fully recover from it.
Loans to Aston Villa, Anderlecht and now Sporting CP haven’t changed anything, with the DR Congo international struggling to have an impact in Portugal.
Making 25 appearances, the 30-year-old has contributed with two goals and five assists in all competitions, but it was made clear early on this year the Portuguese side would not be triggering the option in his contract.
Record are the ones reporting it, claiming the forward ‘will no longer return to work’ at Sporting CP’s facilities, and the ‘official announcement of the decision is only delayed by the signing of the agreement’.
With Bolasie out of Rúben Amorim’s plans, ‘Sporting got in touch with all parties’, who ‘agreed to anticipate the departure’.
Since the forward is contracted at Everton until 2021, decisions will need to be made in the summer, but the most likely outcome will be the Toffees accepting they will have to cut their losses and try to sell him to whomever wants him.
