With Everton in a rather dire situation in the Premier League, the Toffees are doing what they can to bolster their squad in January with limited means.
That means either bringing in players on loan with an option to spend big on them next summer, or targeting those whose contracts end when the campaign finishes.
Moussa Dembélé falls in the latter category, as his contract with Lyon is due to expire in June 2023, and that’s why Everton are going after him.
This comes courtesy of Foot Mercato, who claim the Toffees are ‘very interested’ in the striker, who has scored just two goals so far this season.
He isn’t the only player they have been after, with recent claims from Italy pointing towards an approach for Marko Arnautović, and that should give you an idea of the level of player Frank Lampard is trying to recruit.
Everton know they cannot go for the top targets, so they are trying to find someone that has enough firepower to get them away from the relegation zone without necessarily being a long-term option.
Either way, Foot Mercato explain that while the Goodison Park residents were initially ‘ready to wait until the end of the season to attract’ the French striker, they are now ‘thinking about formulating an offer’ to Lyon to buy out the remaining six months of his contract.
