Idrissa Gana Gueye is set to sign a contract extension at Everton today and turn down the option of a move away from Merseyside.

That’s according to Foot Mercato, who report that Gueye has accepted Everton’s offer of a one-year extension, with the option of another year on top.

They report that Gueye is set to sign his new contract at Everton today, or tomorrow at the latest. The 35-year-old, now technically a free agent, has decided to stay with Everton next season.

His deal expired at the beginning of this month and despite Everton’s efforts to get him signed to a new deal, that had not yet been signed. There has been confidence at the club, though, that the veteran would extend.

He did have offers from elsewhere, with interest in Saudi Arabia and France, where several teams had reportedly sent proposals.

The Senegal international has turned that down though and will instead sign a one-year deal, with the option of another year on top.

That will come as a major boost to David Moyes, who will not have enjoyed the prospect of losing Gueye this summer. He remains a key player under the Scot and replacing him would have been no easy task, in what is already shaping up to be a very busy summer for the Toffees.
