While Sean Dyche may feel there is no talent coming through at Everton, it seems they hold a very different opinion in Germany.
That’s at least if Rheinische Post are to be believed, with them singing the praises of 17-year-old Martin Sherif today.
The newspaper covers Everton’s U18 side today after they competed in the U19 Champions Trophy over the Easter holidays, running out as winners thanks to a penalty shootout success over Sidney FC in the final.
The Toffees had only been late entrants into the tournament after being the last team to accept the invitation, but that proved to be a smart choice as Leighton Baines’ side went all the way and lifted the trophy.
The newspaper explains that the sporting level of the anniversary tournament was ‘very appealing’ and they predict bright futures for some of those who impressed in it.
They say Sherif ‘made a fearsome impression’ on the opposing defenders during the tournament, and not just because of his stature.
He formed one of the ‘most dangerous scoring duos’ with teammate Coby Ebere throughout the games Everton played and they speculate that ‘doors will open for him’ quickly after this.
It’s likely they mean the doors to the Premier League and a place in Everton’s first team rather than a transfer elsewhere, to be clear on that point.
Either way, it seems Sherif has won himself admirers and he may be a name to keep an eye on in the near future, particularly with Everton’s goalscoring problems clear for everyone to see.
