Tottenham Hotspur have already reached an agreement with Swedish side Djurgårdens IF Fotboll for Lucas Bergvall to arrive at the north London club in the summer. The midfielder has agreed a five-year deal with Spurs.

Barcelona showed keen interest in the 18-year-old but Ange Postecoglou’s side were able to beat them to his signature.

Fútbol Gran Canaria is a company that organises training camps for clubs, and their CEO, Kevin Pérez, has been speaking to Marca to discuss how Tottenham were able to overcome Barca in this operation.

The newspaper states Tottenham paid €10m for Bergvall, which is €3m more than what the La Liga side had offered.

Marca say Pérez is Djurgårdens IF’s ‘trusted man’ and had the opportunity to ‘get up close’ with the Sweden international during a camp in Spain.

On Barcelona losing out on Bergvall to Tottenham, he said: “Although he has just turned 18, he’s a very mature and humble boy. I guess the experiences he has had have helped him. He has just been traveling between Barcelona and London to negotiate his future. They even gave him a private jet.”

Pérez has explained why several clubs showed keen interest in acquiring the youngster’s signature, before Tottenham won the battle.

“Lucas is a dynamic player, technically very well gifted and who stands out in the last pass. Quality is his greatest weapon. He has a brutal ability to control and play. In addition, he moves with an elegance inappropriate for his age, that is what has caused teams like Barcelona to become interested in him,” Pérez explained.

According to Pérez, Djurgårdens IF have focused on the teenager’s physique, resulting in a gain of “9 kilos of muscle mass”. He’s of the belief the Premier League side can benefit from his qualities and ability.

“The position in which he performs best is inside or midfield. He likes to play inside, between the lines, to participate in the creation of the game and be in constant contact with the ball,” he added.

“He moves very well between the lines and turns well. I would also point out he almost always receives well oriented to give speed and verticality to the game. The latter could be very good for Tottenham.”
