After the longest negotiations over a €15m bid that we can remember, it appears that Manchester United and AS Roma have finally reached an agreement for the transfer of Chris Smalling.

The England international has been pushing all summer and beyond for a return to the Serie A side after enjoying a loan spell there last season, but his club’s reluctance to accept less than €20m has delayed proceedings.

What appeared to be a deal dead in the water a week ago found some new life in recent days, and a final push from the Italians appears to have got the job done.

That’s what TuttoMercatoWeb are reporting on Monday afternoon, claiming we have now reached ‘the end of the soap’ for the Smalling saga, as an ‘agreement was found a few minutes ago with Manchester United’

This means Paulo Fonseca will ‘embrace once more’ the English defender and the deal is ‘done’.
