No approach to a transfer window would be complete without rumours surrounding the future of Islam Slimani, and L’Equipe come with fresh claims today about the Leicester City player.
It’s explained Saint-Etienne are in search of a senior striker and have set their sights on the Algerian. With only 19 minutes of football so far this season, in the Foxes’ 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, Slimani is described as being at a ‘dead end’ with the Premier League club.
Current ASSE manager Claude Puel has worked with Slimani previously, at Leicester, and in terms of the player’s profile he ticks all the boxes the Ligue 1 club are looking to fill.
However, there’s one rather big issue which could hold a transfer back, and that’s wages.
According to L’Equipe, Slimani currently makes €380k a month at the English club and that figure is way higher than Saint-Etienne would be willing to pay. Therefore compromise would be needed and it’s suggested that could be possible because of the 32-year-old’s contract situation.
With a deal expiring at the end of June, he needs to start thinking about his future and being realistic over his next contract. There’s no mention of a transfer fee, with the assumption Leicester would just be happy to get rid of the player’s salary.
