It looks like the rumours linking Cruz Azul star Orbelín Pineda to Premier League sides won’t last long.

The striker had been linked to the likes of Arsenal, Everton, Southampton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United in the past few weeks, but that’s all been dismissed by media local to his club.

Outlet Vamos Cruz Azul brings a story today claiming these rumours were all a move from Pineda’s representatives for him to get a new contract at the Mexican side. They write that the player doesn’t need those ‘lies’ to agree a new deal.

Journalist Paco Villa put out a tweet saying he hopes the player continues doing well for Cruz Azul, and the outlet uses it as an argument that Pineda shall continue at the club.

Just last week, reports from the Mexican media had also rubbished the Arsenal rumours, claiming that was down to an intermediary trying to push the player to European clubs.

Oberlín Pineda is a 24-year-old winger who has one goal and one assist in 15 appearances for Cruz Azul this season. Although they spent €10.5m to sign him in 2019, he’s currently valued by Transfermarkt at only €4.8m.

Perhaps the likes of Southampton and West Ham may be contacted by intermediary, but his future looks a lot likelier to be in Mexico for now.
