On June 18th, we covered a claim from France that Watford had made a €30m offer for Ismaïla Sarr.
That offer was knocked back by Rennes, and it was reported Newcastle United, then managed by Rafael Benitez, were close to offering a larger amount.
Not long after, Benitez left his role with the club, perhaps the failure for that offer to actually happen was one of the reasons.
On June 10th, it had been reported in France that Rennes wanted €35m, but in the story detailing Watford’s bid, just a week later, the asking price was put at €40m.
In today’s edition of L’Equipe, the failed Watford €30m approach is once again covered.
The French newspaper say Sarr, who is currently away at the Africa Cup of Nations, has a rough agreement with Rennes that he can leave, as long as ‘conditions are met’.
Those conditions likely relate to the asking price, but with that being elastic it’s a hard one for the Hornets to nail down.
