Leander Dendoncker faces an ‘absolute disaster scenario’ of having to move to the Championship this summer when he returns to Aston Villa.
That’s according to Voetbal Nieuws, who report that the midfielder faces a tough summer once his current loan spell at Anderlecht comes to an end.
They explain that Dendoncker has proven to be a ‘big flop’ at the Belgian club since arriving on loan from Aston Villa earlier this year, never reaching the levels that they had hoped for.
It was reported this week that Anderlecht absolutely won’t be buying him on a permanent basis, which means he’ll be returning to Aston Villa. His future there is equally bleak, though.
He still has a year on his deal at Villa Park but has ‘absolutely no future there’ based on his performances this season and the competition in Aston Villa’s midfield.
That raises the question of where he may go and on a recent appearance on Sjotcast, Frank Raes suggested he might have to take a step back to the Championship or a smaller Belgian club than Anderlecht.
Franky van der Elst doesn’t see that, which would be a disaster for him, happening, but the future appears bleak either way.
“Will he go and fight in the Championship? Another Belgian club can never afford him,” he said.
It’s a question that will have to be asked in the summer, with Dendoncker on a downward curve, particularly when you factor in the failed loan spell at Napoli last season too.
