Rangers’ Robin Pröpper is expected to leave Russell Martin’s side and return to FC Twente this summer, a year after leaving them for Ibrox.
Last week, Twente technical director Jan Streuer said he was optimistic about bringing the 31-year-old back to the club.
The Dutch club haven’t signed the Rangers player yet and Joseph Oosting, their manager, is publicly requesting new additions in this window. He’s been speaking to Tubantia, a newspaper close to Twente, and asked for three signings.
“I don’t need a large squad. I’d like a squad with weapons, so we can tighten things up. Two good players. And preferably a midfielder as well. Then we can start forming the team,” he said.
According to Tubantia, the two other positions are centre-back and a left winger. Pröpper is supposed to be the target for defence, but the wait to sign him is gorwing.
Streuer has now given a fresh interview to De Volkskrant, where he publicly talked about the need to improve his side’s defence. The Rangers defender is the main option, but the technical director seems to have doubts over whether they can bring him back to the club.
The Dutchman enjoyed regular minutes at Ibrox last season, but the Twente official is of the belief that may no longer be the case under new manager, Russell Martin.
“We had too many changes at the back last season; something had to be done. It isn’t [very simple], because of all sorts of factors beyond your control,” Streuer explained.
“Just before last season, our captain, Robin Pröpper, left at the last minute. We really missed him. Rangers bought him. A Scottish top club, you can’t compete with that.
“Now there’s a new manager at Rangers, he might play less. Then he could return. But he’ll want to wait and see first whether he’ll actually play less. Do we have to decide: do we wait for that, or do we look further?”
