With Napoli star Victor Osimhen now worth over €100m, many clubs wonder why they haven’t signed him before, and Liverpool should be one of them.

As covered in the Italian media today, the Reds were one of the clubs seriously interested in the striker back when he was playing for Lille, and then Napoli won the race.

In a story told by Giandomenico Costi to Tuttosport (via CalcioNapoli24), it was explained how Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli managed to make that signing, having to go to great lengths to beat Liverpool.

“The Osimhen negotiation… his absolute masterpiece: he was locked up in a hotel in Rome for three days, he knew that Liverpool were on Victor. Klopp had come forward. But Cristiano shut himself up in the hotel with Osi until he convinced him to accept Napoli.”

Giuntoli is actually leaving Napoli following their title-winning campaign in Serie A, but his work to build this squad continues to be highly praised by the local media, with the signing of Osimhen obviously included in that package.

The striker has 28 goals for the Italian club this season, and the word in the local media is that they’ll demand around €150m to let him go. Liverpool don’t seem to be in that fight anymore, and should regret not winning that race back then.
