Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Roland Virkus has recently extended his contract with the Bundesliga club, and that’s prompted Rheinische Post to go over all the business he’s done since he arrived, rating each arrival out of ten.

It leads to perhaps some unfair digs towards a Leeds United player, and also a slight rewriting of transfer history.

Max Wöber signed for Leeds United from Red Bull Salzburg in January 2023, before quickly leaving to Borussia Monchengladbach on loan when the Whites were relegated to the Championship.

Repeatedly during his time on loan in the Bundesliga, it was reported Borussia Monchengladbach were seriously interested in signing him on a longer term basis, potentially permanently, but couldn’t negotiate a fee with Leeds United.

Now it’s all been twisted slightly, with Rheinische Post suggesting Wöber wasn’t really all that during his loan and there were doubts about keeping him regardless of any negotiations with Leeds United.

The report rates him as 5/10 and states: ‘The Austrian came from Leeds United on loan for a year in the summer of 2023. He increased Gerardo Seoane’s options in defence and took on leadership roles from the start. But actions did not always match words: Ultimately, Wöber was not enough of a stabiliser because his own error rate was too high. In the end, in addition to the money, there was probably also a lack of conviction to sign him permanently.’

Wöber’s reputation appears to have been sacrificed at the altar of praising Virkus and repackaging the failed negotiation.
