Having failed to enter into Antonio Conte’s plans at Tottenham Hotspur, Joe Rodon was allowed to join Rennes on loan with an option to buy in the summer transfer window.
The centre-back enjoyed a good start to his life in France, making nine league starts in the first 10 matches. In an appearance in October, the 25-year-old was sent off and subsequently lost his place in the starting XI.
Since mid-October, Christopher Wooh and Arthur Theate have been preferred ahead of the Tottenham owned player.
According to Stade Rennais Online, the competition has ‘become too strong’ for the Wales international at Rennes. After Warmed Omari’s returned from injury, he is expected to be a starter for Bruno Génésio.
Rodon has further dropped down the pecking order and must battle with Jeanuel Belocian for the fourth-choice centre-back spot at Rennes. Therefore, a ‘departure is envisaged’ for the Welshman in January and his time at the club could end sooner than expected.
Rennes plan to cut short Rodon’s loan stay and he will have to either return to Tottenham or go out on loan again in the winter market. For the latter, a new agreement must be found with Spurs.
