Rasmus Højlund will return to Manchester United after helping Denmark secure a 2-1 win over San Marino in the European qualifiers on Tuesday.
Following the match, the 20-year-old accused San Marino players of deliberately wanting to hurt him during the game and he also expressed his unhappiness over the lack of support from match officials.
The Manchester United striker opened the scoring for his country and San Marino’s Filippo Fabbri wasn’t pleased with Denmark’s behaviour in the build up to the goal.
His comments are relayed by Bold.dk.
“We fell behind when we had a player down. If I’m honest, I didn’t expect that kind of thing from a big team like Denmark. They have players who play in the Champions League and the best leagues in the world, but then they choose to beat a semi-professional team that way,” he said.
Højlund scored in the 42nd minute and the San Marino centre-back was not at all pleased with the manner in which the Manchester United player celebrated. In fact, Fabbri was critical of the frontman and explained why he felt his reaction was inappropriate.
“During the celebration, he signalled that we should shut up. We don’t respect that kind of thing. He is one of Europe’s most promising talents and costs €80m. So, there is no need to make fun of a group of semi-professional players like us. I definitely felt disrespected,” Fabbri explained.
On Wednesday, Bold.dk stated that it’s not clear if the knock picked up by Højlund will force him to miss Manchester United’s clash against Sheffield United this weekend.
Erik ten Hag’s side signed the player from Atalanta in the last window and he’s scored three goals from eight games for them this season.
