Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid after his contract at Liverpool runs out in June. Recent claims from the UK and Spain have reported Los Blancos and the 26-year-old are close to reaching an agreement.

Indeed, it’s been reported strongly in Spain since last year.

Real Madrid’s league rivals, Barcelona, have also looked at the right-back, according to Cadena Ser‘s Què t’hi Jugues.

Barcelona have considered signing the Liverpool player on several occasions.

Journalist Sique Rodríguez claims the Catalan club held meetings recently and a few years ago for Alexander-Arnold.

Barcelona had the England international on their agenda when Xavi Hernández was manager at the Camp Nou.

Rodríguez claims Barcelona sporting director Deco had a meeting with Alexander-Arnold’s agent. The Blaugrana weren’t able to reach an agreement and ruled out the transfer for two reasons.

Barcelona have to balance their books to not exceed the salary cap. Rodríguez suggests they couldn’t have afforded to sign the Liverpool player, given salary and signing on bonus.

Hansi Flick and his side have total confidence in Jules Koundé, who has mainly operated on the right side of defence. This is the second reason.

The report states Barca are ‘looking for a low-profile right-back who can grow in Koundé’s shadow, who is a bet for the future’.

The media local to Barcelona are indicating they ruled out a move for Alexander-Arnold, who is set to join Real Madrid for free. Of course, there may be some Catalan bias going on here.
