Borussia Dortmund have been monitoring Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham for a while. Last November, we covered claims from Germany about the Bundesliga club’s interest in the midfielder.
BVB aren’t the only German club as RB Leipzig are said to be interested in him. As well as these two clubs, several Premier League clubs are in the picture to sign the 19-year-old in the summer window.
WAZ state the Sunderland star is an option for Borussia Dortmund next season.
They relay earlier claims about Borussia Dortmund, Leipzig and the English clubs wanting to sign the midfielder and look whether he can follow in his brother, Jude’s footsteps.
Jude left Birmingham City for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 and then secured a big move to Real Madrid in 2023. WAZ contacted David Wagner via phone to know his views on the Sunderland player.
Wagner was in charge at Norwich City between January 2023 and May 2024 and during his time with them, he came up against Jobe when the Canaries faced the Black Cats.
The German claims it’s “extremely striking” how similar the two brothers are physically and on the pitch. He said Jobe lacks the “decisive drive” in the final third and that’s why isn’t as much of a goal threat.
Jobe’s contract lasts until 2028 but he’s expected to leave sooner than that.
When asked if he’s ready to move to the Premier League or the Bundesliga, Wagner explained: “No question. [Jobe has the qualities to] make it in the Bundesliga and the Premier League.”
