A week ago, we covered various reports from Germany which made it clear Danny Röhl was unlikely to get the RB Leipzig job despite him appearing to try his best to be a major candidate.

Some in Germany questioned the Sheffield Wednesday manager even being linked at the start, so he spoke a RB Leipzig focused website and put his case across: “If both sides are convinced that you’re the right coach, then there’s nothing wrong with taking the step to a Champions League club. I may have only been a head coach for just under two years, but I’ve been involved in football for a total of 16 years.

“As an assistant coach in Leipzig, Munich, and at the German Football Association (DFB), I’ve had the privilege of coaching great players, winning the Champions League, coaching at a World Cup, and experiencing a Premier League relegation battle with Southampton. That’s a package that gives me a lot of confidence that I’m ready for any challenge, as long as both sides are convinced of each other.”

RB Leipzig were looking elsewhere and unless they had a series of refusals similar to what saw Bayern Munich turn to Vincent Kompnay last year, the Sheffield Wednesday manager wouldn’t be chosen.

Shortly after that, German journalist Philipp Hinze popped up with the following: ‘There have been no recent talks between RB Leipzig and Danny Röhl. As reported in early May: A move within England is currently more attractive than a transfer to the Bundesliga. Röhl remains an RB alternative, but there has been no recent progress or new developments. Leipzig is initially fully committed to Glasner/Fabregas. Should both ultimately decline or fall apart, they will look for alternatives.’

That felt like someone close to the manager had put a message out there as a face-saving exercise.

Well, it would appear he is indeed interested in a Bundesliga role, at least if Bild are correct.

The German newspaper report Röhl, who is technically still at Sheffield Wednesday, has held talks with Werder Bremen. They sacked their manager Ole Werner today, and have two main candidates, but Röhl isn’t one of them.

Bild report: ‘He was among the closest candidates. However, talks with Röhl failed to achieve their goal.’

Now it’s said to be between Horst Steffen and Lukas Kwasniok.

Back to the drawing board for Danny Röhl, with the Southampton job also slipping away this week.
