There was once a time when Tottenham Hotspur looked at Marcus Edwards’ development at Sporting CP and banked on receiving receiving a big chunk on his future transfer.

Spurs had let the player join Vitória de Guimarães in 2019, keeping a big percentage of a future sale. Edwards moved to Sporting in 2022 and to make the deal cheaper they agreed to let Tottenham keep their percentage. That figure originally stood at 50% but Spurs agreed to lower it to 35% during negotiations to sign Pedro Porro.

Sporting are currently very keen to sell Edwards after a series of problems, and his value has collapsed. Crystal Palace is the latest Premier League club to be linked, as the player’s new agents try to find him a new home.

Intriguingly, Crystal Palace were also linked in June of last year. At that time Sporting were said to want €20-30m, and it was claimed Edwards wasn’t ‘particularly enticed’ by a move to Crystal Palace.

Wednesday’s edition of A Bola reports Crystal Palace interest, with those claims originating in England, and states Sporting would prefer a permanent sale but there are loan possibilities.

Over at Record, it’s reported Crystal Palace only want Edwards on loan without an option and Sporting want some chance of getting rid of him permanently.

His price had already dropped from that €20-30m in the summer to €10m, and now it’s put at €8m.

The 26-year-old hasn’t played for his club since November, and there’s been disciplinary issues which have seen manager Rui Borges keep him out of the squad.

Even prior to that, it was clear Edwards’ development wasn’t continuing the way many had hoped, and Tottenham’s wish for a big kickback payment was in tatters.

Sporting making demands on a clause in any loan is a position which could very well change between now and the end of the window.

Should Crystal Palace interest be genuine, they have a good chance of securing a deal on terms they want, but may need to be patient for a few days.
