Coventry City defender Aurèle Amenda has pulled out of the Swiss national squad due to an injury he picked up in the EFL Cup.
The 23-year-old left the pitch against Aston Villa after 12 minutes. Subsequently, he wasn’t able to get fit for the match against Nottingham Forest.
That issue has now meant he’s withdrawn from Murat Yakin’s Switzerland squad.
The Swiss are being put through a training camp in Turkey before matches against North Macedonia, Scotland, North Macedonia again and then Solvenia.
Frank Lampard had confirmed an issue
Ahead of Coventry City’s match against Nottingham Forest, Frank Lampard explained Aurèle Amenda’s injury situation.
“He’s got a calf injury, and he’ll be scanned in the next 24 hours or so. I would expect him not to be available.
“With Aurele it’s a blow because he’s a player that we managed to acquire quite early in the summer window that we like.
“He’s come in and made a good impact around the place, on and off the pitch, and he’s a good player who will get better with more games and game time in the Premier League so it’s a blow for us to lose him because of what he’s shown but it is what it is.”
Swiss squad going through drama
At the weekend, news broke from Switzerland of Granit Xhaka being investigated over suspicion he’d obtained a forged Covid vaccination certificate. The Sunderland captain, who played for Arsenal at the time of the forgery, admitted his role on Monday morning.
“In recent days, there has been much reporting about a matter from my past. I would like to address this personally. Regarding the Covid-19 vaccination, I was personally very uncertain and had serious concerns at the time. I felt a deep distrust of the vaccine and was plagued by fear and uncertainty.
“In this turbulent emotional state, I obtained a vaccination certificate instead of clarifying my open questions through the proper channels. Today I clearly see that this was the wrong approach. It was a mistake. I am sorry. I take responsibility for this decision, am committed to investigating the matter, and am fully cooperating with the relevant authorities.”
SFV, Switzerland’s FA, confirmed Aurèle Amenda’s absence at the same time it was announced Xhaka won’t be involved.
